Short Bio

Besides the professorship in Timber Engineering at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Dr. Loss holds the associate Chair of the UBC Wood Building Design and Construction cluster. In Italy first, where he received an M.Sc. in Structural Engineering and Ph.D. in Engineering of Civil and Mechanical Structural Systems, and later as a post-doctoral researcher in Canada, he has been dedicating a significant effort in the research and development of high-performance hybrid structural systems and performance-based optimum design procedures for cost-effective buildings. Along the way to UBC, he has been involved in R&D public-funded industrial projects, in projects funded by the Italian Civil Protection Department and the ‘Laboratories University Network of Seismic Engineering’ consortium. Dr. Loss participated in the Italian code development with seismic design provisions for timber structures, and design guidelines – CNR-DT 206 – instructions for the design, execution, and control of timber construction, and drawn up research reports and a design manual for builders. He also was involved in the knowledge transfer from academia to industry, and in patent applications. Dr. Loss was recently nominated member of the subcommittee of the Canadian Standard Association Technical Committee CSA-O86 and observer member for the CEN/TC250/SC8. He also served in the International Advisory Committee of the 2020 World Conference of Timber Engineering and the 2020 Scientific Committee of the Eurosteel Conference.
